FDA OKs Tysabri to Fight Crohn’s Disease
Tysabri, a treatment for multiple sclerosis made by Biogen Idec Inc. and Elan Corp., received regulatory approval on Monday for use among patients with a severe intestinal disorder.The Food and Drug Administration approved Tysabri for use in patients with moderate to severe Crohn’s disease who don’t respond to more conventional drugs, such as Abbott Laboratories’ Humira.The approval represents a comeback for Tysabri, which was temporarily pulled from the market in 2005 after three patients using the drug developed a rare nervous system disorder called multifocal leukoencephalopathy, or PML.
